On June 13, approximately 200 demonstrators dismantled metal fences and barbed wire barriers that enclosed the construction site of an upscale resort on Albania’s Adriatic coast.

Main Points:

  • Around 200 protesters in Albania removed the fence surrounding the construction area for Jared Kushner’s luxury resort.
  • Residents of the village of Rrëshen are protesting the seizure of land for the resort’s development, demanding compensation from the authorities.

Albanians Protest Kushner’s Luxury Resort Development

For several weeks, Albanians have been demonstrating against the planned construction of a high-end resort, backed by a company associated with Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump, near Vlorë, an area known for its flamingos and sea turtle nesting sites.

On Saturday, inhabitants of the village of Rrëshen, situated amidst sandy beaches and pine forests in northwestern Albania, staged a protest against yet another construction project, asserting it is being built on their expropriated land.

Waving Albanian national flags and shouting “Revolution,” they pulled down the fencing. Clashes erupted between them and the police, but law enforcement did not prevent them from dismantling the barrier.

The demonstrations will persist until the residents of Rrëshen receive compensation. “There are 200 families whose lands were confiscated,” stated 56-year-old Zeqë Nikolli Shullani, one of the landowners who has been protesting for months.

Protests against the development of the Adriatic coast by a company linked to Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, commenced in Albania in June. The €1.4 billion resort is being constructed under the management of Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has declared that his country will proceed with the luxurious resort project, planned by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and his daughter Ivanka Trump on a remote stretch of the Balkan coastline, notwithstanding protests concerning its environmental impact.

The European Commission has urged Albania to implement immediate measures to ensure compliance with EU environmental legislation if it wishes to join the bloc.
