Italian leader Giorgia Meloni has stated that Rome and Washington’s relations should “return to normal” despite her public dispute with US President Donald Trump.

Key Points:

  • According to Meloni, she no longer wishes to fuel this dispute.
  • The head of the Italian government is keen to normalize relations with the United States as soon as possible.

Meloni is ready for dialogue with the USA again

The Prime Minister of Italy has announced that she has no intention of continuing the public conflict with the US President, which erupted on social media last week.

In her words, relations between Rome and Washington should revert to their usual format of cooperation. Meloni noted that she voiced this position during a meeting of the Council of Ministers, where future international meetings were discussed.

She also supported the decision of the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, to cancel his visit to the United States amid the dispute with Trump.

In the premier’s opinion, this step sent a clear signal, but there is no need to escalate the situation further.

Meloni is convinced that the conflict will not affect the strategic relationship between Italy and the USA. She emphasized that the two countries are linked by a long-standing partnership, which cannot be called into question due to a social media spat.

The relationship between Italy and the USA is one that does not begin or end depending on who is in power at any given moment; we must return foreign policy to the level of depth it should have.
